A man who was returning home after a long shift refused to offer his seat to a pregnant woman one night. Afterwhile, he posted the entire story on Reddit forum Am I the A*sh*le to get the opinion of the online community.
Young Man Refused To Offer His Seat To The Pregnant Lady
This young man had told this incident to his family members as soon as he arrived home. This behaviour has made his family members go wild and so, he shared his experience on Reddit to check whether the online community agrees.
He had to use the bus as the method of transport to and from his work, waiting for the insurance month after totaling the car.
There, in his story, he explained how he had to be on his feet all day long for about 10-hours. And also as to what he had posted he was to walk another 15 to 20 minutes after he got down the bus. He had relished his time sitting and resting on the bus with a heavily tired body and very sore feet.
The Pregnant Lady Gets On The Bus
This happened when the young man was returning home by bus one day. The closest option for the pregnant lady was this young man as there were only a very few seats due to the rules imposed because of the COVID’19.
“I’m the closest to her, so she starts giving me imploring eyes.” he posted. “I had my headphones on and tried to pretend I couldn’t see her, but once she started talking to me it became inevitable.”
The lady had begun crying saying that she was a single mother even though this man explained his situation very calmly. This was the exact point where the things got ugly.
“I told her I’m sorry, but that was her personal choice and she can’t expect other people to accommodate her life choices.” he wrote. “We live in a state where birth control and abortions are free, so I don’t know why this should be my problem. It’s not my fault she decided to have a baby when she can’t afford a car.”
An Old Passenger Gets Into The Scene
During this conversation, an elderly man was involved in the scene and yelled at him, saying that he was a “worthless punk.” The old man had then got up and offered the pregnant woman the seat. Suddenly, the bus made a stop while they were shifting the places and both of them had fallen down.
Then, both the elderly person as well as the pregnant woman have yelled at this young person more and more with a lot of nasty words. But, he had pretended to ignore all these yells until he reached his stop.
The Opinion of The Online Community
Most of the users were in their idea saying that he was wrong due to not offering his seat to the lady. Many users argued saying that he could have offered even though he was tired after the 10-hours shift on his feet, as pregnant women are more susceptible to hurting themselves as well as the child if they fall.
“Did you know that being heavily pregnant really alters your balance, let alone the tired thing?
No – you didn’t ask her to be pregnant, but you can, as an able-bodied otherwise healthy person just choose to be nice. By being a selfish grumpy bugger a heavily pregnant person and an old person fell over. Bringing up the contraception/abortion/’breeding’ angle too really makes you an ass.
I bet you’re a real ‘nice guy’.”
Perhaps, he isn’t “wrong” but…
Amidst the crowd who only pointed out his mistake, there were some who said that others in the bus could have given up the seats. Some pointed out the mistakes and the weirdness of the lady’s behaviour, decisions and the words too.
“Public transit sucks. I assume there WERE other people who could have offered a seat but didn’t. Diffusion of responsibility does that, and once she “picked” this guy, it let everyone else feel morally superior because they totally /would have/ done it if she’d asked them but she didn’t.
But his attitude is so horrible that he’s the AH. I think her immediately jumping to being a pregnant single mom is weird (part of the reason I don’t believe this story), but him going off about BC and free abortions (what state is that???) and her bad decisions are what sealed it for me.”
He is unaware about her situation, just like she doesn’t know his
Majority was concerned about his unawareness of her situation at the moment. Perhaps, her car was left in a shop. The commenters got more angry as he had mentioned about abortions. The commenters reminded him that taking his job which “sucks but the pay is good so I deal” is one of his personal choices. So, why does that particular choice of him qualify him to have a seat?
“The whole giving up seats for the pregnant and the elderly thing isn’t because they’re pregnant/elderly, it’s because these particular groups are more likely to fall and suffer serious injuries when they do.
OP, being tired sucks, but being tired and sore doesn’t make you more vulnerable to bad falls, being pregnant does. That’s why you’re supposed to give up your seat. YTA and a massive one at that (because of the rant).”
However he exposed his inner badness to the entire Reddit community through his replying comments and it had made the users who said that he isn’t a bad person just because he didn’t give his seat very much disappointed.
Will this young man learn a new lesson through this experience? What do you think?
